RE: RUMORS AND INNUENDO
As many of you are aware, an individual has been circulating pamphlets alleging inappropriate conduct by Murphy Theatre staff members. We do not intend to dignify these allegations by describing them here.
These allegations are being circulated by the soon to be former spouse of a Murphy Theatre staff member. Needless to say, a former spouse might feel motivated to disparage his former partner out of lingering resentment or a desire to control the narrative about their separation. Emotional pain from the breakup, jealousy, or a need to shift blame can drive this sort of negative behavior. A former spouse may also believe that by harming the former partner’s employer, he or she may gain some advantage in upcoming divorce or custody proceedings.
This is all very unfortunate, especially as it involves private matters playing out in public view.
Let us be clear up front: the Murphy Theatre retains full and complete confidence in all of our staff, including both the Executive Director and the employee who is being harassed.
Please be assured that the Murphy Theatre takes this matter very seriously. Accordingly, we have taken the following actions:
1. Although the Murphy Theatre did not not receive any first-hand information that inappropriate conduct had occurred, out of an abundance of caution the Theatre hired a lawyer with substantial law enforcement and investigative experience to promptly look into these allegations. The lawyer conducted interviews with individuals with relevant information – including the person who initially made the allegations – and gathered any available evidence. As a result of his investigation, the lawyer determined that there was not sufficient or credible evidence to support these allegations.
2. The statements from the former spouse appear to be unlawfully targeting individuals and businesses with current or potential business relationships with the Theatre. As a result, Counsel for the Theatre sent the former spouse a “cease and Desist” letter. The Theatre is also considering further legal options which we cannot describe here.
3. Our primary concern remains the safety of our patrons. The escalating and irrational pattern of conduct demonstrated by this former spouse, unfortunately, raises safety concerns. The staff member involved has sought a protection order from the courts which would prohibit this individual from entering the theatre. We will also arrange for additional security during upcoming events.
The entire Murphy Theatre Family – including the Board, staff, volunteers, and members – appreciates your understanding during these difficult times. Please continue to send your love, support, and good wishes in our direction as we deal with these challenging issues.
We promise to keep you updated on these matters to the extent we can while still protecting the privacy interests of those involved.
