In 1918 at the grand opening of the Murphy Theatre, builder, financier and former owner of the Chicago Cubs World Series Championship and Pennant winning baseball team, Charles "Charlie" Murphy states that Wilmington was the town he loved and where his heart would always be regardless of worldly interests elsewhere.
He wanted to build his monument on Main Street and not in Sugar Grove Cemetery. This theatre was a gift to his hometown community and the place where future generations could gather to enjoy fine entertainment.
More than one hundred years later, we celebrate his legacy and generosity here at The Murphy Theatre.
